Texas Women’s Foundation (formerly Dallas Women’s Foundation) announced that it invested a record $4,644,115 during fiscal year 2018 in programs and projects designed to transform Texas for women and girls. A catalyst for positive change across the state, the organization raises funds for statewide research, advocacy and programming to unlock economic security and leadership opportunities for women, girls and their families.
The record investments conclude an exceptional year for the organization, which included a number of significant milestones. The Foundation established two signature leadership initiatives to help strengthen the pipeline of female leaders at every level of business and the community. In addition, the organization completed its $50 million “Unlocking Leadership Campaign” and used the occasion to launch its transformation into Texas Women’s Foundation.
“As an organization committed to advancing economic security and leadership opportunities for women, girls and families, we are proud of our accomplishments in 2018,” said Texas Women’s Foundation President and CEO Roslyn Dawson Thompson. “We saw progress across every measure of change – from investing in our mission at unsurpassed levels during a single year, to changing our name and launching innovative solutions that empower women and families to make a better world.”
Moving Women and Girls From Surviving To Thriving
The organization’s evolution to Texas Women’s Foundation better represents its 33-year heritage as the trusted leader in promoting equity and its stature as one of the largest women’s foundations in the world. With more than $35 million in assets, the Foundation raises funds from a broad base of donors, including individuals, foundations and corporations. These resources help to advance economic and leadership opportunities for women, girls and families.
“We have a bold mandate to Transform Texas for Women and Girls, and plan during 2019 to continue moving across the state in our spheres of expertise – building on our reputation as a credible, objective knowledge resource and collaborating with our partners, donors and friends to drive positive social change for the benefit of all Texans,” said Dawson Thompson.
The transformation was the intended outcome of Texas Women’s Foundation’s $50 million Unlocking Leadership fundraising campaign, which successfully concluded in 2018. The funds and the Foundation’s statewide mandate will enable even greater investment in Texas women and girls. “We are grateful for our many donors who so generously invest in the power of women and girls to build stronger, more equitable communities across Texas,” said Dawson Thompson. “When Texas women, girls and families thrive and when our leadership fully reflects our population, our state’s economy and our futures are stronger.”
As part of its evolution, during 2019 and beyond Texas Women’s Foundation aims to extend the reach of its Economic Security Initiative – an annual investment of $2 million – that identifies, supports and advocates for proven strategies and new, innovative ideas that help improve the economic stability of women, girls and families. The organization also has committed $1 million in annual investment for its Leadership Initiative, which is focused on increasing the number of Texas women in leadership positions, and creating and funding new opportunities for women and girls to lead statewide.
Already in 2018, Texas Women’s Foundation demonstrated substantial progress with its Leadership Initiative, establishing two new programs designed to increase the number of women in leadership positions. The Foundation created the Women’s Leadership Institute, a year-long leadership development program for women business executives who have the potential to advance to more senior career positions. The Foundation also launched the Young Women’s Initiative-Dallas (YWI-Dallas), a seven-year cross-sector collaboration designed to empower and affirm young women of color ages 16-24, particularly those in the most under-resourced neighborhoods, to lead in their lives and in their communities
According to CEO Dawson Thompson, with the generous support of donors, the Foundation plans to invest an additional $5 million to benefit Texas women and girls during fiscal year 2019. She concluded by saying, “When you give to Texas Women’s Foundation, you are directly contributing to the economic stability and future of Texas. We urge you to join the movement – sign up today to become a part of our army of advocates, our champions of Economic Security and our legion for Leadership.”
